Best World Beaches: White Beach of Boracay Island

The world knows Boracay and the world knows of White Beach. No other beach on the island is as popular, or as populated. No other beach has whiter or finer sand, either. The sand here is said to be as soft as powder and it never gets hot enough under the sun to burn skin.

The four-kilometer-long White Beach is perfect for relaxing, people-watching and showing off. The azure waters are perfect for swimming, diving, scuba diving and other water sports such as
kayaking, boardsailing and wind surfing.

Socializing is continued in the many shops, bars and restaurants that stay open not only all day but even through the night and well into the wee hours of dawn. Resorts, hotels and lodging houses provide rest for the weary.

Various kinds of transport are available to explore the island by road or by sea.

Since the main entry point to Boracay in the dry season is White Beach, there are three boat stations.

A totally unoccupied beach on Boracay Island? Yes, there's such a place on the southeastern coast - Tambisaan Beach. Only 2.5 kilometers long, it's the ideal place to be to get away from it all.

Just enough to cushion the isolation is the sleepy little village right next to the beach. There's also the fact that the Boracay Main Road is just up a path.

Tambisaan Beach perks up in July to November, though. In this wet season it becomes the primary entry point to Boracay.

Tulubhan Beach seems like a coveted quiet place in famous Boracay, with its Paradise Bay Resort and a scattering of private homes.

Even the white beach itself is small and quiet, shaded by old trees and dotted with coves. To its north is Bulabog Beach while to its south is Tambisaan Beach.

Tulubhan Beach can be reached by traversing a path from the Boracay Main Road.

If you love the challenge of going it rough, be sure to visit Ilig-Iligan Beach in Boracay Island.

Just getting there is a challenge in itself. Although the beach is reachable by road or by sea, the road is steep and the sea is sometimes choppy.

Located on the east coast of the isle, the white sands of Ilig-Iligan Beach resemble the desert. As if to compete with the tough terrain, the sea is rough on swimmers. Children and weak swimmers are discouraged.

Ilig-Iligan Beach boasts of various caves and coves to explore. Half an hour's walk inland are the Bat Caves, for which locals can be hired as tour guides. There is a jungle, as well, with the trees hung with fruit bats.

As a respite from the excitement, visitors can visit the Seashell Museum beside the beach, with its display of rare sea shells, ancient Chinese artifacts, Philippine pottery, wood carvings and handmade costumes.

Two beaches right beside each other in Boracay Island are Punta Bunga Beach and Bunyagan Beach, both quite secluded.

Punta Bunga Beach, known for its seashell-dotted sands, can be reached after a short walk north from Balinghai Beach. Visitors may be able to rent some homes built on the hills next to it, with awesome views.

Going a little bit further north brings one to Bunyagan Beach, another one carpetted with fine white sand. Near it is a coconut grove that would be perfect for picnics.

The true center for windsurfing and kiteboarding in Boracay Island is Bulabog Beach, host of the
annual Boracay International Funboard Cup since 1988. The Cup is an official leg of the Asian Windsurfing Tour.

Windsurfing activities reach their peak in January to March when the winds and the currents are at their strongest. Kiteboarding continues until June or July when the southwest monsoon begins.

Beginners can avail of windsurfing and kiteboarding lessons right on the beach.

In contrast, visitors may opt to go on a hike to the highest point on Boracay Island, which is Mount Luho.

Despite all the activities, Bulabog Beach retains an air of quiet. It is still a good place to just lie around in and relax.

Creature comforts are provided for amply by various resorts and hotels.

And when you're in the mood to be among more people, there's always White Beach nearby. You can just walk over in five minutes or take a quick spin on a tricycle.

Manoc-Manoc Beach at Boracay Island is for those who want a lot of action, or those who want to witness a lot of action as they lounge on the sand.

Visitors can take advantage of the strong winds and strong currents all year round - sometimes reaching six knots - by windsurfing and kite surfing. Spectators can experience the thrill vicariously and capture everything on camera.

Further action is brought in by bancas - native motorized boats - that sail from Caticlan, just across the channel, bringing more visitors as well as supplies for Boracay's brisk tourist trade.

Caticlan and its port and mountains are a sight to behold, too, against the blue sparkling sea.

Bancas are not the only boats to be seen, either. Manoc-Manoc is the site of the Boracay Beach and Yacht Club which is in itself a resort featuring a restaurant, cottages and beach entertainment facilities.

Despite all these, Manoc-Manoc Beach remains relatively quiet in contrast to the busier Boracay beaches.

Located on the southernmost tip of the island, it can be reached easily by tricycle from the Boracay Main Road.

Best World Beaches: Puka Beach of Boracay

One of the more quiet beaches in famous Boracay Island, for those who want a vacation away from noisy crowds, is Puka Beach.

This beach was named after the world-renowned Puka shells that used to be scattered all over its sands. Nowadays, these shells are rare and no one is allowed to collect them. Fashionistas can only try to find vintage collections from accessories dating back to the Sixties and Seventies when they were the height of style.

With only bits of shell and coral remaining in its sands, Puka Beach is now a great place to walk on barefoot. This gave rise to its other name, Yapak Beach, since "yapak" means to go barefoot in the local language.

Visitors can traverse its length of 800 meters, and will end up in the Lapuz-Lapuz cliffs. This area is the most rugged part of Boracay and is at its northern tip.

Swimming and snorkeling in the sea is possible if proper caution is exercised. The beach drops sharply into the deep and currents are sometimes strong although waves are mild.

Sailing is another possibility. There are boats to be rented, namely, the outriggered native paraw and the motorized banca.

Bring your own food, drinks and other provisions since vendors may not be around to meet your needs.
